Mike was a classmate of mine in elementary school. He was large in stature even then, taller and more massive than any of us, but he was always a gentle giant. While he seemed easy going, I could tell that he cared deeply about his friends and even wanted to protect them when he thought they were being mistreated. He had a great sense of humor and could easily laugh at hemself. I lost track of him after graduation, but I thought of him often and wondered if he were making people comfortable with his slow smile and warm, friendly manner. Go in peace, Mike; I will miss you.
I think I last saw Mike in the late 80s at a Summit Hall Elementary School function. I thought I was just a face in the crowd to him but he recognized me. He was his usual, gentle giant self (but a bit older). We had a pleasant conversation. I hope he rests in peace.
